Floods have wreaked havoc in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent days due to heavy rains. Flash flooding has caused major disruption in parts of the country, resulting in road closures and the deployment of the army to help shore up defences. The town of Kostajnica in central Bosnia and Herzegovina has been particularly affected by the floods.
Cause of the Flooding
The recent heavy rains in Bosnia and Herzegovina have caused flash flooding in parts of the country, as well as road closures in neighboring Croatia. The cause of the flooding is believed to be linked to a landslide near the Bosnian-Croatian border.
The landslide blocked the main river in the region, causing the water to back up and flood areas downstream. This caused catastrophic damage, with some towns and villages completely submerged.
The army was deployed in Croatia to help shore up defences in the central part of the country around the town of Kostajnica.
The situation has been further exacerbated by rising temperatures, causing snow and ice from higher elevations to melt more quickly and add to the already swollen river.
Flash floods pose a serious danger to local populations due to their sudden nature and ability to sweep away people, homes, and possessions.
Residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia must remain vigilant and stay informed of weather conditions in order to protect themselves from flash floods and other natural disasters.
With climate change causing extreme weather patterns like flash flooding, it is important for residents to take steps to prepare for these changes such as stockpiling emergency supplies.
Additionally, countries should work together to implement adaptation plans to minimize damages in the future.
For example, if a landslide had occurred on one side of an international boundary while there were flash floods occurring on the other side, both sides should agree that there are resources available across borders so that they can mitigate impacts.
In the case of flash flooding, this could include agreements about warnings for populations downstream or constructing levees to control the flow of water.
Sheila said, A flash flood is a natural disaster where water suddenly rushes down hillsides and mountainsides after storms with little warning.
Flash floods usually occur when the ground remains wet for an extended period of time, saturating earth’s surface until the slope’s capacity to contain any additional rainwater is exceeded.
She went on to say, This phenomenon often occurs during heavy rainfall over wide areas which flows down slopes and hills into valleys (usually because of poor drainage). Such localized but severe convective precipitation often occurs inside thunderstorms associated with violent winds.
Despite progress in understanding flash flooding at home and abroad, events like those in Bosnia will continue to occur as long as natural hazards exist.
Countries need to work collaboratively in order to better understand potential flash flooding risk zones, conduct proper mitigation efforts during construction projects, and provide adequate warning systems for population centers at risk.
Destruction Caused by the Flooding
The torrential rain that swept through Bosnia and Herzegovina has caused severe damage, particularly in the form of a flash flood. The intense downpour overwhelmed rivers and streams, leading to rapid rises in water levels.
This flooding left many communities under water, with homes and businesses destroyed in its wake.
In the town of Kostajnica, the flooding was so severe that the army was deployed to help build up defences against the rising waters. Several roads in Croatia were also closed as a precautionary measure to prevent further flooding.
The flash flood brought about by the heavy rain is an example of how quickly extreme weather can cause devastation. In just a few hours, lives and property were destroyed, leaving many people without basic necessities.
Although the extent of the damage is still being assessed, it is clear that the area has suffered immensely from the flash flood. Many areas have been rendered inaccessible, while much needed emergency resources are unable to reach the hardest-hit regions.
Heavy rain not only causes flash floods but can lead to landslides, debris flow or avalanches which can result in injury or death.
This case is especially worrying because such natural disasters are increasing around the world due to climate change.
While we cannot predict when these devastating events will happen again we should always be prepared for any eventuality by following safety guidelines such as storing emergency supplies like food and blankets close at hand or taking out insurance policies that will protect you from financial loss due to these types of events.
Flash floods can occur after extremely heavy rainfall – if you are unlucky enough to find yourself caught in one follow these steps:
Stay Calm; Evacuate; Keep Moving – don’t stay near your car, if possible don’t try to cross fast-flowing water;
Seek Higher Ground – buildings and other objects that protrude high above the ground offer protection;
Huddle Together – families with children should move towards older members who are less likely to get separated during panic.
